The Myrtle Grove Sunday School was established in 1920 and then on February 27, 1927 Myrtle Grove Chapel was dedicated. The congregation assembled on March 25, 1945 to formally organize Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church with 54 charter members.
In 1976 Myrtle Grove called Reverend Horace Hilton to be the pastor and some of its most exciting and dynamic years of ministry were just ahead. Rev. Hilton’s first Sunday as pastor was July 11, 1976. The Spirit of God created an excitement that kept drawing more and more people who were hungry for the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. By 1979 membership had risen to over 400. Members came from all denominations: Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalian, and others.
In 1977 the church purchased land on Piner Road (our present location) and on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1980, the congregation gathered at the old church facility and carried the cross down the road in a procession to the new church facility which seated 750.
1986 would begin a period of transition for Myrtle Grove. On June 1, 1986, after ten years of serving as pastor, Horace Hilton retired. That same year, members of Myrtle Grove participated in organizational meetings to plan a child abuse center for New Hanover County (which became the Yahweh Center) and to organize the Pregnancy Care Center (which become Life Line Pregnancy Center). Myrtle Grove Christian School opened its doors in the fall of 1988.
On December 3, 1989, the congregation voted overwhelmingly in favor of seeking dismissal from the PCUSA (Presbyterian Church USA) and joining the EPC (Evangelical Presbyterian Church). Myrtle Grove adopted the Aringa people group of Uganda, Africa in 1997 and continues to the present to focus on missions and outreach.
Myrtle Grove is a “Word and Spirit Church”. This concept combines the strengths of both the evangelical and charismatic traditions, where believers are hungry for the Word and thirsty for the Spirit.
In the fall of 2006, Myrtle Grove called Dr. James Glasgow as Senior Pastor. Pastor Jim had served as an Associate Pastor at Myrtle Grove from 1980-2000. Another new chapter has begun in the life of this church and we at Myrtle Grove look with expectation for what God has in store for us in the days ahead.
